Easter Revision Courses – GCSE Chemistry

Starting on Monday, 2nd April 2018 to Friday 6th April 2018, 3 pm – 8 pm daily.

Boards:

Based on the Edexcel specification but suitable for other boards.

Description:

During the course, students will learn the theory of all the topics, focusing on becoming able to describe and explain key concepts, to perform numerical calculations using the appropriate formulae and to answer context-based questions following a logical and concise approach.

Through exposure to past papers, students will be able to develop and improve their exam techniques and methodologies.

Syllabus covered:

Fundamental ideas

Atoms, elements and compounds, atomic structure, the arrangement of electrons in atoms, forming bonds, chemical equations.

Rocks and building materials

Limestone and its uses, reactions in carbonates, the limestone reaction cycle, cement and concrete, limestone issues.

Metals and their uses

Extracting metals, iron and steels,  aluminium and titanium,  extracting copper, useful metals, metallic issues

Crude oil and fuels

Fuels from crude oil, fractional distillation, burning fuels, cleaner fuels

Products from oil

Cracking hydrocarbons, making polymers from alkenes, new and useful polymers, plastic waste, ethanol.

Plant oils

Extracting vegetable oil, cooking with vegetable oils, everyday emulsions, food issues.

Our chaining planet

Structure of the Earth, restless Earth and Earth’s atmosphere, life on Earth, carbon dioxide and gases in the atmosphere.

Structure and bonding

Chemical bonding, ionic and covalent bonding, metals and ionic compounds

Structure and properties

Simple molecules, giant ionic, covalent and metallic structures, the properties of polymers and nano science.

How much

The mass of atoms, masses of atoms and moles, percentages and formulae, equations and calculations, the yield of a chemical reaction,  reversible reactions,  analysing substances, instrumental analysis.

Rates and energy

How fast, collision theory and surface area, the effect of temperature, concentration, pressure and catalysts, catalysts, exothermic and endothermic reactions, energy and reversible reactions, using energy transfers from reactions.

Salts and electrolysis

Acids and alkalis, making salts form metals, bases or solutions, electrolysis and electroplating.

The periodic table

The early and modern periodic table, Group 1 and Group 7 elements

Water

Hard water, water issues and treatment

Energy calculations

Fuel energy and issues, energy transfers in solutions, energy diagrams ,, calculations using bond energies.

Analysis and synthesis

Tests for positive and negative ions, titrations, chemical analysis and equilibrium, altering conditions, the Haber process.

Organic chemistry

Alcohols, carboxylic acids and esters, organic issues.
