Revision Tips to Get You Ready for Exam Season
There are always many people on hand who want to impart their advice on revision and share stories about how they got through their exams but in reality, all you need are our 3 top tips for success and you will sail through the exam season with your sanity left intact.
1 – Revision Planning
Little and often is the key to revision rather than trying to cram everything in at the very last minute. Rather than spending the two weeks before your exams in panic mode, it is much better to map out your revision a few months before the exams start, that way you will be ready for whatever comes your way. Create a revision timetable that you can live with; no one would be happy to revise for every spare minute and you will need to factor downtime and fun into your schedule! When you have worked out your revision slots then fill them with your subjects and share the time out evenly. When you have your revision timetable completed then put it on display all over the house so that everyone will know what you are up to and can offer support and snacks when you are getting down to work. Remember that for every hour you revise you must take a quick 5-10 minute break to help reset your brain and that no revision schedule should encourage hours of endless revision without something to look forward to halfway through!
2 – Variety of Tasks
Revision is not just reading, re-reading and reading some more. You need to come up with a range of activities that you can use to help you remember key information. Here are just a few that may come in handy:
- Mnemonics will help you remember key dates and facts
- Sticky notes with key vocab can be stuck around your room
- Colouring in diagrams will help embed images in your mind
- Reading aloud may sound funny but will help you recall facts easier
- Make games out of facts that you need to remember
3 – Use Past Papers and Mark Schemes
No one can underestimate the power of a past paper. There is so much you can learn from papers that have been given out in the years before you and will help you get to grips with what the exams look like long before you sit in the exam hall. However, don’t forget that for every past paper there is also a past mark scheme that shows you how the paper should be marked. These mark schemes are gold and will give you information on what the examiners are looking for.
